A private well that stopped delivering water is not automatically a new pump. In Ramona, Alpine, Valley Center, Bonsall, Lakeside, and Julian, the first split is electrical: is there power at the disconnect, or is the pump itself dead? Bright Pro Electric matches you with a licensed electrician for the house-side circuit. We do not pull pumps.

An independent electrician testing a well-pump disconnect on an East County San Diego property

If you feel a tingle at the well head, a pipe, or a pressure tank, leave. Call 911 if anyone is hurt. Then call. Do not stand in water and reset a breaker.

Electrician side versus well-contractor side

The electrician owns the circuit from the panel to the listed disconnect, the GFCI or breaker that protects that run, and the conductors to the point the well equipment listing names. Copy ampacity and protection from the motor nameplate and the listing. This page does not invent horsepower or breaker size.

If the disconnect is dead, the problem is still on the house side until someone proves otherwise: a tripped breaker, a failed GFCI, a burned splice, a rodent chew on a buried run, a panel that lost a pole. Half the house with no power and a 20-amp or 240-volt breaker that will not hold are related patterns.

If the disconnect is live and the motor will not run, that is well-equipment territory: the pump, the control box, the pressure switch on the tank, the drop cable down the well. A licensed electrician can confirm voltage at the load side. They should not be asked to pull the pump as electrical work.

East County outages and PSPS look like a well failure because the house still has some lights on a generator and the tank runs dry. Check outage.sdge.com before anyone opens the well. A portable generator plan that forgot the well circuit is a transfer switch conversation, not a new pump.

What to have ready before the visit

Note whether any other 240-volt loads died (range, dryer, A/C disconnect). Note whether the well has a separate disconnect at the tank or only a breaker in the house. Note last rain, last outage, and whether the pressure gauge on the tank is sitting at zero.

Do not bypass a GFCI at the well. Do not jumper the pressure switch. Do not reset a breaker ten times “to fill the tank.”

Unincorporated Ramona, Lakeside, Alpine, Bonsall, and Valley Center permits sit with County Planning & Development Services. Electrical-only is $392 on PDS-613 effective 07/10/2026 when a permit is required. City of San Diego well equipment is rare inside the city; if the address is City, Development Services is the office. Poway is its own building division.

This page does not publish a well-circuit repair price. No verified San Diego figure sits in the claims file.

Check the electrician on the CSLB license lookup. C-10 is the electrical classification.

Frequently asked questions

The well pump hums but will not start. Who do I call?

Humming with voltage at the disconnect is often the motor or the control. Confirm voltage first with an electrician. If voltage is present and correct, call the well contractor next.

Can a generator run my well?

Only if the transfer equipment and the generator can carry the starting load on the nameplate. That is a listed plan, not an extension cord to the pressure switch.

Do I need a permit to replace a well circuit?

New conductors, a new disconnect, or a new breaker are typically permitted work. Confirm with County PDS or the city on the address.

When to call us

Call when the tank is empty and you do not know if the disconnect is live. Call (858) 988-5580. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm. After hours, leave a message on the contact page. We match you with an independent licensed electrician. We do not service the pump in the hole.
