Panel Upgrades

Electrical panel upgrade and repair in San Diego.

Most panel upgrades fail inspection for one of three reasons: wrong load calc, sloppy grounding, or no permit. The electricians we connect you with pull the permit, coordinate the SDG&E disconnect, do a real load calculation for the home, and stay on site through inspection. Most upgrades finish in a single day.

When this is the right call

  • Adding an EV charger, heat pump, or pool equipment
  • Panel is Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Challenger (insurance-flagged brands)
  • Breakers trip frequently or feel warm to the touch
  • Visible rust, scorch marks, or melted insulation in the panel
  • Home is on a 100-amp service and you want to add major loads
  • Selling the home and the inspector flagged the panel
  • Permit history shows the panel is original to a 1970s or older home

Panel repair or a full upgrade

The panel is Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Challenger

That is an upgrade, not a repair. Those brands have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip, and many carriers require replacement before they will write or renew a policy. New breakers in the old can do not fix the bus.

One breaker will not stay on, or one lug looks burned

Repair can be enough if the brand is still supported and the bus is clean. A licensed electrician replaces the failed part, checks torque on the rest, and says in writing whether the can itself is still safe. If the bus is pitted or plated away, the answer flips to a full swap.

You want an EV charger, heat pump, or ADU on a 100-amp service

Start with a load calculation, not a panel quote. Some houses have the headroom. Many do not. The electrician you are matched with should show the NEC 220 math before selling a 200-amp service.

The panel face is warm, or you smell plastic at the can

That is an emergency, not a Saturday upgrade. Shut large loads off and call. Heat at the cover means a connection is already failing under load.

Panel Upgrades the network covers

These calls come in under a lot of different names, and the electricians we connect you with handle all of them across San Diego County: 200 amp panel upgrade, electrical panel upgrade, electrical panel repair, subpanel upgrade, and commercial panel upgrade. Describe the job in whatever words make sense to you when you call, and the operator sorts out the actual scope before anyone is dispatched.

Common Electrical Panel Upgrade questions

What does an electrical panel upgrade in San Diego include?

A standard electrical panel upgrade in San Diego includes the permit, a new meter socket, the main breaker and busbar, all circuit terminations, a proper grounding and bonding system, the SDG&E disconnect and reconnect, and the inspection. A load calculation comes first so the new service is sized for what the house actually draws.

How much does a 200-amp panel upgrade cost in San Diego?

A straightforward 100A → 200A upgrade in a single-family home runs $2,800 to $4,200 installed, including the permit, new meter socket, main breaker, grounding, and SDG&E coordination. Long meter-to-panel runs, exterior weatherheads, or buried service feeders add cost. Ask for a written quote before work starts.

Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade?

Yes. Every main panel replacement requires a permit through your city or county building department. Electricians in our network pull it, schedule the SDG&E disconnect, and stay on site through inspection. Working without a permit can affect homeowners insurance and creates problems at resale.

How long is the power off during the upgrade?

Typically 4 to 6 hours. Electricians in our network coordinate with SDG&E for the morning disconnect and reconnect by late afternoon on most jobs. Refrigerator and freezer are fine for that window. If you have medical equipment or a home office, we can plan around it.

Should I replace my Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?

Yes. Both have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip during a fault, which is a fire risk. Many home insurance carriers now require replacement before issuing or renewing a policy. Replacement pays for itself in safety and insurability.

Can an electrician repair my panel, or do I need a full upgrade?

Repair is enough when a single breaker, a cover, or a lug has failed and the panel brand is still accepted by insurers. A full electrical panel upgrade is the job when the bus is damaged, the panel is Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Challenger, or you need more amperage for an EV charger, heat pump, or ADU. The electrician you are matched with should say which case you are in before quoting.

Can you install a sub-panel for an ADU or detached garage?

Yes. Sub-panels are how we add capacity to detached structures, in-law units, and pool equipment without rerunning the entire main service. The pros we send size the feeder, pull conduit, and bond the sub-panel correctly. Permit handled.
