Troubleshooting

Electrical repair and troubleshooting in San Diego.

Electrical problems hide. A flickering light might be a loose connection three rooms over. A tripping breaker might be one bad outlet. The electricians we match do not guess and swap parts. They use clamp meters, tracers, and, when it is worth it, infrared to find the actual fault, then repair it on the same visit when they can.

When this is the right call

  • A breaker keeps tripping and you can't figure out why
  • Lights flicker when an appliance turns on (or for no clear reason)
  • An outlet is dead and you don't know what circuit it's on
  • You smell burning plastic or melted insulation but can't locate it
  • A switch, outlet, or wire is hot to the touch
  • GFCI keeps tripping and you can't identify the bad load
  • Half the house went dark but the main breaker is on

What the symptom usually means

Half the house is dark and the main breaker looks on

That is often a failed main lug, a burned neutral, or a lost hot on a 120/240 service. It is an emergency, not a reset. Turn off large appliances and call. Do not keep flipping the main.

One room of outlets is dead and the lights still work

Check a bathroom, garage, or patio GFCI reset first. Lighting and receptacles are often on different circuits. If no GFCI feeds that room, stop opening plates and call.

Lights dip when the AC or a shop vac starts

Usually a high-resistance connection at the panel, the meter, or a shared neutral, not a bad bulb. That needs a meter, not a dimmer swap.

You smell burning plastic or an outlet is warm

Emergency. Kill that breaker if you can reach it safely and call. Heat and smell mean the connection is already failing.

Troubleshooting the network covers

These calls come in under a lot of different names, and the electricians we connect you with handle all of them across San Diego County: electrical troubleshooting, electrical repairs, electrical problem diagnostics, electrical fault finding, and electrical short repair. Describe the job in whatever words make sense to you when you call, and the operator sorts out the actual scope before anyone is dispatched.

Common Electrical Repair and Troubleshooting questions

How much does electrical troubleshooting cost?

Ask whether the diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you book. Most repairs (bad outlet, loose neutral, failed breaker) finish in the same visit and cost $185 to $575. Hidden faults that need wall opening or attic work cost more; we'll tell you before we go down that path.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Three usual causes: too much load on the circuit (overload), a short circuit (hot touching neutral or ground), or a real ground fault. AFCI breakers can also trip on arc-fault detection, which is sometimes a real problem and sometimes nuisance. The pros we send diagnose which one it is, not just reset and hope.

Is a burning smell from an outlet an emergency?

Yes. Turn off the breaker for that outlet immediately and call us. A burning smell means insulation is melting or a connection is arcing. This gets flagged urgent when we match you with an electrician.

Why do my lights flicker when the AC kicks on?

Usually a high-resistance connection somewhere on the main service or in the panel. The AC inrush draws hard, and the resistance causes a momentary voltage drop. We find the bad connection. It's almost always something the pros we send can repair without rewiring.

Can you find a dead outlet that's on no obvious circuit?

Yes. Circuit tracers and tone generators identify which breaker controls the outlet, even when the panel directory is wrong (which it usually is in older homes). We re-label the panel directory while we're at it.
