A wall outlet that feels hot, looks browned, or smells like hot plastic is stop-use. Unplug what is in it. Leave that receptacle unused. If there is smoke, sparks, or flame, leave the house and call 911, then a licensed electrician. Do not operate the main. Bright Pro Electric matches you with an independent licensed electrician. We do not diagnose the outlet from a photo.
A warm light switch is a different device. Dimmers can run warm by listing. A standard receptacle is not a heat source you should feel as a home diagnosis. This page is the outlet.
Stop-use signs at the receptacle
Heat that is uncomfortable. A plate that is brown, yellow, or melted at the slots. A plug that is discolored. Buzzing. A burning smell. A cord that is too hot to hold. Any of those is stop-use on that outlet and on the circuit if the heat is at the panel too.
Do not keep using a “slightly warm” USB cube in a browned outlet because the lamp still works. Do not wrap the plate with tape. Do not move the same failing space heater to the next outlet on the wall. The next yoke may share the same splice.
If the 20-amp breaker for that kitchen or garage run is also tripping, leave it off after one clean reset.
What heat at an outlet can mean (categories, not a cause)
Loose connections at the yoke. A backstab that let go. A failing receptacle. A plug and cord that are undersized for the load. Overload on a 15-amp living-room run that is feeding a space heater. A shared splice in the box. This page does not name one from a symptom.
Older Mid-City, Lemon Grove, and National City houses with high pre-1978 stock are where worn receptacles and loose backstabs show up. Newer Carlsbad and San Marcos tracts still grow heat when a heater or a charger sits on a 15-amp living-room circuit. Housing age is a reason to inspect. It is not a diagnosis.
A GFCI that is hot is still stop-use. Resetting it is not a repair.
Do not open the outlet. The electrician de-energizes the circuit, then opens the box. Bright Pro Electric does not.
Heaters, chargers, and the “it only gets warm when”
A space heater on a 15-amp bedroom circuit in an inland El Cajon or Escondido winter is a common heat pattern. A phone charger that is warm on a good outlet can match that listing. A charger that is hot, a plate that is browned, or a smell is stop-use.
EV charging on a household receptacle is a different product and a different circuit. Level 2 charging belongs on a listed EV charger installation, not on a warm garage outlet.
If several outlets in one room are dead and one is hot, that is a circuit problem, not a single bad face. See outlets not working in one room.
Permits and replacement
Like-for-like receptacle replacement at the same box can be a local exemption question. Opening a run, adding GFCI, or relocating the box is often permitted work. Confirm with the office for the address.
This page does not publish an outlet-replacement price. No verified San Diego figure for a hot-outlet call sits in the claims file. If the electrician adds a new 15- to 45-amp circuit in the City of San Diego, the published Simple permit for the first five of those circuits is $176.57.
Check the contractor on the CSLB license lookup. C-10 is the electrical classification.
Frequently asked questions
Is a slightly warm outlet normal?
A standard receptacle should not be a heat source you use as a test. Heat, discoloration, buzz, or smell is stop-use. A listed USB charger can run warm on a good outlet. The plate should not.
Can I keep using the other half of a duplex outlet?
No. If one slot is hot or browned, leave the whole device unused. The two halves share a yoke.
Should I reset the breaker and try again?
If there is heat, smell, or discoloration, leave the breaker off after you cut power to that circuit. Do not re-energize to “see if it cools.” Call.
