A video doorbell that is dead, that reboots, or that killed the mechanical chime is an electrical mismatch until someone measures the transformer. Ring is the brand people search. The job is the existing low-voltage doorbell circuit versus the listing on the new button. Bright Pro Electric matches you with a licensed electrician. We do not sell the doorbell.

A broader smart home wiring plan is a different page. This one is the doorbell circuit.

What actually has to match

Copy the voltage and power the doorbell listing asks for. Copy what the chime listing will accept. Older San Diego bungalows in North Park, City Heights, and National City often have a small transformer in a closet, a panel knockout, or a chime box. Newer Carlsbad and San Marcos tracts may already have a larger transformer. Measure. Do not assume a national “upgrade the transformer” slogan is true for your house.

A mechanical chime, a digital chime, and no chime at all are three different landings. Some video buttons need a listed power kit at the chime. Some need the chime bypassed. That is the product sheet, not a Bright Pro rule.

Do not land a video doorbell on a random 120-volt receptacle with a USB cube and call it the hardwired product. The listing for the hardwired model is a low-voltage circuit.

Wi-Fi complaints with a lit button are not an electrician diagnosis. Power complaints are.

What the electrician does

Finds the transformer. Measures unloaded and loaded voltage against the doorbell listing. Replaces the transformer when the listing requires it and the existing unit cannot hold. Corrects the chime landing. Runs new low-voltage cable when the old pair is broken in plaster.

Like-for-like transformer replacement at the same box can be a local permit question. A new 120-volt receptacle for a plug-in transformer, or a new cable through finished walls, is often permitted work. Confirm with the office for the address.

If the job adds a new 15- to 45-amp circuit in the City of San Diego, the published Simple permit for the first five of those circuits is $176.57. Most doorbell transformer swaps do not add that circuit. Do not quote $176.57 as the doorbell price.

This page does not publish a transformer-swap labor figure. No verified San Diego number sits in the claims file.

Check the contractor on the CSLB license lookup. C-10 covers connecting electrical apparatus. The doorbell brand support line does not replace that license.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my video doorbell keep losing power?

Undersized or failing transformer, a chime that is stealing the power kit, a loose landing, or a shorted pair in the wall. Have it measured. Rebooting the app is not the electrical test.

Can I replace the doorbell transformer myself?

It is a 120-volt primary with a low-voltage secondary. The primary is live work. A licensed electrician is the safe path.

Does a video doorbell need a permit in San Diego?

A like-for-like button at the same wires can be a different question than a new transformer or a new cable. Ask the building department for the address.
