An electrical fire behaves differently than a kitchen or trash-can fire, and the wrong extinguisher, or the wrong instinct, can turn a small problem into a dangerous one. Knowing which extinguisher class to reach for, and knowing the moment to stop fighting the fire and get out, matters more than owning the extinguisher itself.

The right extinguisher for an electrical fire is rated Class C

For a fire involving live or recently energized equipment, an outlet, a switch, a panel, or an appliance still plugged in, the extinguisher needs a Class C rating, or a multipurpose ABC extinguisher that includes Class C coverage. The U.S. Fire Administration defines Class C for electrical equipment such as appliances and tools plugged into an outlet. Its extinguishing agent doesn’t conduct electricity.

The U.S. Fire Administration defines Class A for ordinary materials like cloth, wood, and paper, and Class B for combustible and flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, oil, and oil-based paints. A multipurpose ABC extinguisher covers all three classes in one unit. That’s the sensible choice for a home, since a fire that starts electrically often spreads into nearby combustible material, and you don’t want to be sorting through separate extinguishers rated for separate fire types while a fire grows. Check the label. A Class C or ABC rating should be printed clearly on the cylinder.

A Class A-only extinguisher, or plain water, is not the right tool once electricity is part of the equation. That’s the next point, and it’s the one that causes real injuries when people get it wrong.

Never use water on a fire involving live electricity

Water conducts electricity. Throwing water, or aiming a Class A water-based extinguisher, at a fire that’s still connected to an energized circuit creates a path for that electricity to travel back through the water stream toward whoever’s holding it. That’s not a small risk. It’s the reason Class C exists as its own rating in the first place.

Never use water on an electrical fire, and cut power first only if the breaker is safe to reach. If you can’t get to the panel safely, or you’re not certain the equipment is de-energized, treat the situation as one where an extinguisher isn’t the answer yet. The priority becomes getting people out and calling for help.

This is also why an extinguisher rated only for Class A, the kind meant for paper and wood fires, doesn’t belong near an outlet, a panel, or an appliance that’s still plugged in. If you only have one extinguisher in the house, it needs the C rating.

Know when to fight it and when to leave

A home extinguisher is built for a small, contained, early-stage fire, not a structure fire. The decision to use one at all comes before the decision about which one.

Use an extinguisher only when all six conditions are true: others in the building have been alerted; someone has called the fire department; you’re physically able to use an extinguisher; the fire is small and contained to a single object or surface, such as a pan or wastebasket; you’re safe from the fire’s toxic smoke; and you have a clear escape route. If you’re uncertain about safety in any way, alert others, leave the building, and call 911 from a mobile or a neighbor’s phone. If any of those conditions isn’t true, if the fire is spreading, if there’s already heavy smoke, or if you’d have to walk through or past the fire to reach the door, the correct action is to leave immediately and call 911. Property is replaceable. A fire that’s already past the point a single extinguisher can handle is a job for the fire department, not a homeowner with a canister.

If the fire started at an outlet, switch, or panel and you can safely reach the breaker for that circuit or the main breaker, cutting power removes the ongoing source of ignition and makes the situation safer to approach, if you approach it at all. If reaching the panel means going near the fire or through smoke, skip it and get out.

How to use a Class C extinguisher correctly

The U.S. Fire Administration teaches the PASS technique: pull the pin, aim low at the base of the fire, squeeze the lever slowly and evenly, and sweep the nozzle from side to side. Keep your body a safe distance back and stay between the fire and your exit the entire time, never let the fire get between you and the door.

Discharge the extinguisher fully if needed rather than stopping partway and assuming it’s out. Keep watching the area for reignition because a damaged connection can still be generating heat after visible flame is gone. If there is any doubt, the fire department should be the one to clear it. Once the immediate danger is handled, don’t re-energize that circuit or plug anything back in. The cause is still there even after the fire is out, and it needs a licensed electrician to find and fix, not a reset breaker and a hope it doesn’t happen again.

Keep the extinguisher ready before you ever need it

An extinguisher only helps if it’s charged, accessible, and you know where it is without thinking, which means checking it before a fire, not during one.

Mount at least one ABC or Class C extinguisher somewhere central and reachable, near the kitchen and within reach of the main living areas, not buried in a garage cabinet behind other gear. The U.S. Fire Administration says many extinguishers have gauges that show when pressure is too high or too low. It also says some extinguishers need shaking monthly, while others need pressure testing every few years. Follow the label on your own unit.

Kitchens and garages deserve their own units too, rather than relying on a single extinguisher elsewhere in the house. A garage often holds the fire’s other likely ingredients, stored fuel, a workbench with power tools, an EV charger, alongside the panel itself, and a fire that starts there can spread fast if the nearest extinguisher is two rooms away.
