Reset a tripped breaker safely

A breaker trips once in a while. Three times in a week, that's a warning.

What you'll learn

  • How to spot a tripped breaker vs. a failed breaker
  • The right way to reset (you must go fully OFF before ON)
  • When a repeated trip means stop and call a pro
  • What to never do with a tripped breaker

Step by step

  1. Open your main panel door.
  2. Find the breaker in the middle "tripped" position.
  3. Push it fully OFF (past the middle position), then back to ON.
  4. Wait and monitor. Trips again within an hour? Stop and call.
Safety note

Never tape or wedge a breaker to hold it ON. That's a fire hazard. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Challenger panels are known for breakers that fail to trip. If you have one, book a replacement quote.
